SYNERGYSTIC ANDROGOGY

Synergistic Andragogy (SA) focuses on the learning experience and its potentially powerful outcomes. On a type of learning which occurs through the interaction of two or more groups of adult learners such that the combined effect is greater than the sum of individual group learning. It combines two concepts, synergy and andragogy

Synergism brings two or more forces together based on the belief that joint efforts and combined energies are greater than individual efforts. Research suggests that the value, performance, and power of teams, groups, and collectives are often stronger than individuals acting alone.

Andragogy is founded on key assumptions and principles of adult learning process.

5 Assumptions of Andragogy

    • An adult is a self-directed human being
    • Uses his/her reservoir of experience as a resource for learning
    • His/her readiness to learn becomes oriented increasingly to the developmental tasks of his/her social roles
    • His/her orientation toward learning is problem centred with focus on immediacy of application of knowledge
    • His/her motivation to learn is internal

4 Principles of Andragogy

    • Adults need to be involved in the planning and evaluation of their instruction.
    • Experience (including mistakes) provides the basis for the learning activities.
    • Adults are most interested in learning subjects that have immediate relevance and impact to their job or personal life.
    • Adult learning is problem-centred rather than content-oriented.
